2013 Yearbook

Below are links to the pages of the 2013 yearbook.  Thank you everyone for a great year.  As determined at the banquet, we will attempt to return to a 10 team league next season.  Anyone aware of interested participants, please contact me (that includes team Warren if you are reading the blog).

Second Half Results

The results from August 20 and the final standings are now posted.  The second half was particularly competitive, with three teams tying for first.  The first tie breaker is head-to-head competition in the second half.  Teams Kraus and Moritz both defeated team Nelson, preventing a two half sweep.  The Kraus and Moritz teams tied in the second half, but team Kraus won three matches, which is the same tie breaker that was used in the Miller-Wolfe championship match a couple years back.  Also, team Kraus finished higher than team Moritz in the first half.  So, it will be a Kraus-Nelson matchup for the league title, and efforts to get it scheduled before the banquet on Tuesday are underway.

There was a good response on the signup sheet for the banquet.  For those of you who did not sign, I will contact you (if I have contact information) to see if you just didn't see the sheet or if you are not available.  I do not plan to post any further results until after the banquet, but all will be revealed next Tuesday evening.

Updates and Banquet Info

As promised, below are updates on the Sy Brandt and year-end tournament.

Regarding the banquet, there will be a sign-up sheet at the front desk for those who want to attend on August 27.  The cost will be $20 for food (drinks on your own), and we will meet in the same room that we have in previous years.  I hope that most of you will attend.

Sy Brandt Standings
22.93  Kevin Kiser
22.91  Will Nagel
22.61  Lynn Paulson
22.29  Brad Nelson
20.60  Dave Rieves

Steve McDonnell has a strangle-hold for the tournament's first flight, having already posted an 81.  Dave Rieves is currently in second at 93.

The second flight is more competitive, with Will Nagel leading with an 83.  Paul Barnett and Steve Moritz are close behind at 86.

In the third flight, Ed Corcoran has posted an 83, with Pat Fahey in second with an 88.

Year End Banquet

Brad Nelson is making arrangements for the league banquet (given that all of defending champion Team Warren left the league this year).  He is checking with Paisans.  The question for all of you - should the banquet be on August 27?  Please let me know by the end of the night on August 20.

Week 13 Results

The results from week 13 are now posted, and the results for week 12 as well.

The standings are of particular interest.  All 8 teams are within 5 points of each other.  Team Nelson is well positioned for a two half sweep (plus the league scramble), but 6 teams have some hope of winning the second half.

Steve McDonnell had the low score this week, with his third straight 38.  Tom Weber had the low net with a 23.  There have been some extraordinary low net scores lately, which should make for a competitive tournament.  Speaking of which, I will provide an update on the tournament and the Sy Brandt standings later this week.

Week 13 Pairings - August 13, 2013 and Week 12 Results

The week 12 results are now posted.  David Miller led the way with a 36, net 22, and an 18 stroke victory in his match.  Caleb Hopkins had the low net score of 21.  Thus continues a run of some seriously low net scores in recent weeks.  In team news, the Nelson team has surged into the second half lead, and is now well positioned for a two half sweep with two weeks to go.

The week 13 pairings are shown below.  Please note the earlier tee times.

Week 11 Highlights

The results from week 11 are now posted.  The big story this week was a 6 point sweep by the Molter team, highlighted by a stellar 34 (net 22) shot by Will Nagel.  With the sweep, the Molter team has a narrow lead over the Moritz team, who were almost single handedly saved by Steve Moritz's 7 stroke beat down of the Commissioner (no doubt there will be some consequences for that indiscretion).

The Nelson team made a push for a rare two half sweep by securing 5 points, despite a 10 stroke win by Ed Corcoran for the McEvilly team.  Apparently the McEvilly twosome was so focused on not losing retired Pat's wallet on the course for the second straight week that they neglected to focus on their golf games.  Proof that it is difficult to multitask and succeed at golf.

2013 Flight Tournament

We have reached the last four weeks of regular season play, the league-wide Flight Tournament will begin on Tuesday, July 30. The rules are as follows.
  • To be eligible to win your flight, you must golf at least three of the final four weeks of the regular season.
  • At the end of Week 10, the league shall be split into three relatively even flights, based on handicap at that time. (The ideal composition would be flights of 11, 11, and 12 golfers, but it was not possible this year given the handicaps.) This year, Flight 1 will be golfers with a handicap of 11 or less, Flight 2 those with a handicap between 12 and 14, and Flight 3 those with a handicap of 15 or higher.
  • For purposes of the Flight Tournament, each golfer's handicap shall be frozen at their Week 11 handicap. That means that if your handicap is 14 for Week 11 matches, your Flight Tournament handicap will be 14. (This does not affect a golfer's weekly handicap for regular season match-ups, which may continue to change, based on their last 8 league scores.)
  • Each golfer's weekly Flight Tournament scores are calculated by subtracting his Flight Tournament handicap from his weekly raw scores.
  • Each golfer's total Flight Tournament score is the sum of the three lowest weekly Flight Tournament (net) scores.
  • The golfer within each flight with the lowest total Flight Tournament score is the tournament winner for that flight.
Here are the three flights for the tournament.

Week 10 Highlights

The results from week 10 are posted.  The league average was 2 strokes more this week than last.  I blame the frigid temps (we all know that it needs to be at least 80 and humid in order to have ideal scoring conditions).

Paul Barnett made a rare appearance this week and showed us all up with a drive to the end of the fairway on hole 5 and a tee shot to a couple feet on hole 6.  He also tied Ed Molter for the low net round.  I imagine captain Raymer is hoping to see more of Paul down the stretch.

Dave Rieves is rounding back into form, shooting a league low 37.  With an atypical 9 handicap, Dave will be a leading contender for the first flight of our season ending tournament, which begins next week.  I will get more information on that out in a couple days.

Week 9 Results

The July 16 results are now posted.  Among the interesting results - Bob Jokisch shot a net 28, and lost by 8 strokes!  Pat Fahey came in with a big grin on his face.  A net 20 will do that.  Can anyone remember a lower net score in recent memory?  Congratulations to Pat!

A lot of people had good nights, with way too many scores in the net 20s to list them all.  Among those not listed, Brad Nelson won two hole prizes and parred all four par 3s.

Turning in Scorecards for July 16

I have an early tee time tonight, and will be leaving early for a short vacation.  Cody Loew, who is subbing for David Miller in the second to last group, will be collecting the scorecards and the hole prize results.  If you are leaving before Cody gets in, please leave your scorecards at the main desk in the clubhouse.  Cody will be giving me the cards on Monday, and I will try to get the results posted next Monday evening.

Keep hydrated today.  It is going to be a warm one.

Week 9 Pairings - July 16, 2013

The pairings for week 9 are shown below.  A lot of subs this week, which reminds me to post a rule on awards for the 2013 season.

When Commissioner Wolfe managed our league, he set up a special rules committee that included Dave Wolfe, Dave Rieves, and me.  With Dave Wolfe's departure,  I asked Matt Raymer if he would be interested in joining our special rules committee, and he agreed.  I convened the committee last Tuesday to discuss how many weeks a golfer needs to participate in 2013 to be eligible for the low average and Sy Brant awards.  Our decision was 10 weeks, which means showing up at least two-thirds of the season is required.  I hope this makes sense for everyone.  Please contact me if you have any concerns.

Want to Improve your Golf Game? Be the Next League Commissioner!

Thanks to Brad Nelson for his post on my first round as the new Commissioner.  I fear that Matt Raymer has some pretty sore neck muscles after spending so much of Tuesday evening shaking his head in disbelief.  Clearly I am not nearly as good as I played that night, so it must have been due to being the Commissioner.  For those of you who might be interested is taking over next year, consider some of the benefits I experienced on my first night.

1.  Getting my name listed on the standings page 5 times.
2.  Winning 3 golf balls.
3.  Vaulting into the lead for the Sy Brant award.
4.  Golfing for free.

This could be you!  I expect requests to be the next Commissioner to pour in by the dozens, so be sure to volunteer quickly.

The results and standings for July 9 are posted.  One notable outcome is that David Miller has become such an intimidating presence on the golf course that none of the other 3 golfers in his foursome showed up.  David will have a sub next week, but here is hoping that future opponents will have the courage to face him.

So, Lynn had a nice outing.

The Lynn Paulson era of the UW Men's League opened on a high note, especially for Lynn. Tuesday's forecast of strong thunderstorms gave way to a sunny and calm evening. If our Commissioner had any opening night jitters, he hid them from the troops by shooting an even par round of 32.

Other highlights of Lynn's round included a 30 foot put, a 30 foot chip in, and on hole number three... A HOLE IN ONE. Matt Raymer, golfing against Lynn, parred the third and fourth holes, for which he was rewarded by losing three strokes to the leader.

Over a drink last night, I discussed my round with Kathryn Harrold, my lovely wife:

Our congratulations go to Lynn, along with our gratitude for his commitment to the league. Strong work!

Week 8 pairings - July 9, 2013

July has arrived, and with it the passing of the commissioner torch.  Our league had a fabulous leader in Dave Rieves for more than 2 decades.  Then, incredibly, Dave Wolfe took commissioning to a whole new level.  Although these two have set impossibly high standards, I will try to hold things together until a more worthy replacement can be found.  Following a legend is quite the challenge.  I am hoping Dave Wolfe will be posting the results of the scramble from his new home in Eau Claire.

Below are the pairings for Tuesday, July 9.  Hopefully our luck with the weather will continue.

1st Half Results and Scramble News

Congratulations to the Nelson team for winning the 1st half (in this 8-team, asterisked season).  Week 7 results and final first-half standings are posted.

Also ,I'm still leaving after I take care of the scramble and the league needs assistance with commissionering in the second half this year and beyond.

The league scramble will be held next Tuesday, June 25.  Here are the scramble rules and such.  Have fun.

There will be four "regular" holes prizes.  Each earns the winner $5.
  • Longest holed shot (putt or chip) on #3
  • Longest drive in fairway on #4
  • Closest to the pin (on the green) in 1 shot on #6
  • Closest to the pin in 2 shots (on the green) on #7
Tee Times
4:48 Kraus – Please take flags out for the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th holes. Thanks.
4:57 Molter
5:06 Miller
5:15 Wolfe
5:24 McEvilly
5:33 Moritz
5:42 Weber
5:51 Nelson - Please bring the flags in

Reminders:
  • You must count at least one tee shot from each member of your group. On your scorecard, note whose tee shot you use on each hole.
  • Count your putts on each hole, and note them on the scorecard.
  • Get some damn birdies!

Rules (for those unfamiliar with the scramble format):
  • Each foursome plays as a team and keeps one score for the team (including putts).
  • After each golfer tees off, the team picks one shot to play next, and each golfer hits from there. The three people whose shots won't be used should retrieve their balls and drop within a club-length of the ball chosen to be played, but if the ball you are playing is in the rough or a hazard you must play from that rough or hazard. You may improve your lie (winter rules).
  • Follow this same procedure until your team holes out.
  • When putting, the first person puts a mark down to identify where the others should putt from if the first person misses.
  • At least one tee shot from each golfer in the foursome must be used on one of the nine holes. You do not need to decide whose tee shot is to be used until after everybody has teed off on a hole, unless you are forced to use a specific golfer’s tee shot on holes 7, 8, or 9 because you have not used one of their tee shots yet.
Tiebreakers
  1. Most holes-in-one
  2. Most eagles
  3. Most birdies
  4. Fewest putts
  5. Higher average team handicap (those without handicaps will not be counted)
  6. Higher lowest individual handicap on the team
  7. Fewest total strokes on the five par 4 holes
  8. Best score on #5
  9. Best score on #7
  10. Winner of thumb wrestle-off
  11. Higher average body-fat percentage
  12. Lower blood alcohol content (BAC)

Volunteers (or meagerly paid helpers) wanted!

If you read this blog in chronological order, you already know that I am leaving Madison and, therefore, the golf league at the end of June.

What this means to the league is that somebody (or somebodies) needs to take over my in-season duties after the league scramble on June 25.  Here is a breakdown of what I do (and a little bit of how).  It may be that the duties can be split up and I'll take a stab at that.  I am definitely willing to sit down with people before I leave to go over the tools I use, and I will be available for email/phone consultation if you get stuck. (I will be temporarily living in my in-laws' guest room, so any opportunity to interact with the outside world will be appreciated.)

Please let me know if you have any interest in helping out or - if you don't have any interest - whether you would be willing to take on some duties for the benefit of the league (which has been around since 1958!).

FYI - The league commissioner does get paid, in the form of free greens fees taken out of annual league  dues.  If these duties are split across multiple people, you could split the stipend also.

Prep for the week:

  • Update the week's match-ups displayed in upper-right corner of blog.  Technically, this task could be skipped.  (Estimated 5 minutes)
  • Update handicaps based on previous week's score.  This is done in a spreadsheet by adding last week's scores and removing the 9th-oldest score.  The handicap is the updated automatically.  (I would say this will take 5-20 minutes, based on how familiar one becomes with it.)
    • I usually first enter the golfer scores in a separate tab of the spreadsheet so I can report scores for all 14/18 weeks at the end of the year in the yearbook.  I then copy-and-paste them into the handicap tab of the spreadsheet.
  • Create the pairings.  Using the existing schedule and a pre-set algorithm (documented in the spreadsheet), enter the golfers and their handicaps and set the individual match-ups based on the algorithm. (15-40 minutes)
  • Add the pairings to the blog. Technically, this step could be skipped.  I try (tried) to do it on Sunday nights.  It involves copying the pairings from a special tab in the spreadsheet into a blog post and then just tidying it up a bit.  (5-10 minutes)
  • Print out pairings and post a copy at the clubhouse.  If I can't be at the course before the first tee time on Tuesday, I take it over on Monday night. (10-45 minutes, depending on whether you make a special trip)
  • Determine whether anybody still owes you money and who is owed a prize ball.  When I have my ^&@* together, I take a list with me to the course so I know. (10 minutes)
Tuesday Nights:
  • Bring pairings, if I haven't already posted them.  I usually bring a second copy so I can hang them near the first tee.
  • Bring list of who owes money and who is owed a prize ball.  Hunt them all down if time allows.  Write down everyone who pays and everyone you've given a ball, because you're old and won't remember after the round (or maybe that's just me).
  • Make sure the first group takes out prize flag-sticks (if you're there).  Since there are new guys working the clubhouse, I usually have to remind them we need the sticks.
  • Collect scorecards at the end of the night.
  • Report all scores < 40 to the clubhouse for inclusion in the newspaper.  (I still do this, though I have no idea of the post-Scheer clubhouse actually calls them in.  This may be moot now if they no longer call them in.)
  • Collect hole prize winners (just the names - not the actual people) at the end of the night
Post-Tuesday work:
  • Enter all scores into the pairings spreadsheet.  The spreadsheet will automatically calculate the individual match-up and team points. (5-20 minutes)
    • I currently enter every hole for every player in the spreadsheet, which then automatically calculates the score for the round.  This is not a necessity, though I do catch about one addition error per week. (10-30 minutes)
  • Update the standings spreadsheet with the team scores.  Then re-sort by total points and adjust the "Place" column. (5-10 minutes)
  • Update the standings spreadsheet with the league average, low gross, low net, 12-putts-or-less, and hole prize winners. (5-10 minutes)
  • Save both the pairings (results) spreadsheet and the standings spreadsheet as PDF's. (1 minute)
  • Upload both PDF's to Google Docs (or some other cloud-based storage) such that you can provide Internet links to them. (5-20 minutes)
  • Add the Results and Standings links to the blog. (5-10 minutes).
  • Write something pithy to the league about what went down on Tuesday night. (3-6 hours)
There's also post-season work (yearbook, banquet prep, etc.) and pre-season work (ensure rosters are filled, teams are ready, spreadsheets are ready, prize balls are purchased) that I won't get into now.  I hibernate from September through March.

Two Weeks' Notice

Dearest UW Men's Golf League -

I hereby submit my two weeks' notice as Commissioner/Secretary/Scribe for the UW Men's Golf League.  While I have appreciated the opportunity and career growth you have provided to me over the last five years, I have accepted another position in another city and will no longer be able to serve.  My last day as Commissioner/Secretary/Scribe will be whenever I finish up the mess left by the June 25 League Scramble and transfer my duties to a new (or interim) Commissioner/Secretary/Scribe.

As for the less important matter of fulfilling my golfing duties, Dave Rieves will be rejoining the league, as a member of the Molter team, and Matt Raymer will move to the Wolfe team, which will henceforth be known as the Raymer team.  This will all be effective when league play resumes for the second half on July 9.

Please donate my final paycheck to the Society for Moving the Out-of-Bounds Markers on 9 at Glenway.

Also, may I use you as a reference?

Sincerely,

Soon-to-be-former Commissioner
David M. Wolfe

P.S. - This is not a joke.  I'm really leaving.

P.P.S. - Still not a joke.

Week 5 Results

I have posted week 5 results and standings.  There are only two weeks left in the first half, and the Weber team takes a 3.5 point lead over the Miller and Nelson teams, who are tied for second.

I received my shipment of new prize balls yesterday, so I'll have lots to distribute next Tuesday.  I also need to collect $25 dues from about seven of you.  I'll be looking for you Tuesday.

If anyone is looking for a Tuesday sub, I believe Dave Rieves is available.  Book him quickly - he's already locked up for 6/11.

Week 4 Pairings - May 28

WEATHER UPDATE (9:00 a.m. Tuesday)
I talked to the folks at Glenway this morning.  They expect that the course will remain open all day.  However, they will likely not let carts out on the course.  After a hard rain this morning, the course has drained well, with no standing water on the 4th or 9th greens at least.  There may be some standing water in the fairways.

Here are Tuesday's pairings, with some really good head-to-heads.  Lynn Paulson & Keith Brown post their 8 handicaps against each other in the last foursome, there's a lot of bad blood in the Williams/Delveaux match-up, and I believe there were fisticuffs the last time Weber & Raymer faced off.

4:48 & 4:57 Wolfe vs. Miller
Caleb Hopkins New Ed Meachen 15
Adam Hopkins 13 David Miller 13
David Wolfe 13 Doug Hoerr 9
Mike Sanders 14 Charlie Hoslet 17

Week 3 Results

Results for week 3 are now posted.  There was a 1/2-point mistake in the pairings and standings for Week 2, which has now been corrected in the Week 3 standings.  I believe the end result was an addition of 1/2 point to the Miller team at the expense of the Moritz team.  (Perhaps Bob Moritz will think twice about parking in the Commissioner's favorite spot next time.)

Week 2 Results

Results and Standings are now posted.

There was no beverage cart last night because summer help was suffering through Finals Week.  We should have one next week.

As far as the golfing goes, it's Chris Weber's world and we're all just punching out from behind trees in it.  See you next week!
