Rule and Process Changes

We had a good turnout at our league banquet and had an excellent conversation about potential rule changes.  The concensus was that there will be no change to how weekly pairings will be established.  A description of new rules for next season follow.  A note on the unplayable lies rule - Keith Brown was right that the official rules provide another option (and I learned something new - thanks Keith).  However, our new rule is more advantageous for players, and a single approach will result in a consistent approach for all.  Please contact me if you believe I got anything wrong.

Winter Rules
Play the ball where it lies.  Any player wishing to improve his lie can do so with a one stroke penalty using the unplayable lies rule described below.

Lost Balls
For a ball lost anywhere on the course, a player will drop a ball with a one stroke penalty anywhere along a line on which the shot was hit.  Players should not take longer than 2 minutes to locate a ball.

Balls Out of Bounds
For balls deemed to be out of bounds on the right hand side of holes 1, 2, 6, 8, or 9, a player will drop a ball with a one stroke penalty anywhere along a line from where the shot was hit to where it went out of bounds.

For balls hit out of bounds over the green on holes 2, 5, 8, or 9, players will drop within two club lengths of the tree line, closer to the hole, where the ball crossed the out-of-bounds line.  The ball may be placed closer to the hole in this situation because the shot will still be difficult and because determining the closest location not closer to the hole will be difficult and may slow down play.

Balls in Woods on Hole 7
If a player hits a ball into the woods on hole 7 and does not locate the ball within one minute, the player will drop a ball with a one stroke penalty anywhere along a line from where the shot was hit to where it went into the trees.  If a player is able to quickly locate his ball in the woods, he has the option of hitting the ball where it lies or taking a drop and one stroke penalty as described above.

Unplayable Lies
A player may determine a lie to be unplayable at any time (this most frequently occurs when a ball is located underneath a pine tree).  If a player determines a lie is unplayable, he will go to the nearest point of relief, not closer to the hole, with unobstructed access to the fairway (but not necessarily the green).  From there, the player would take a drop within two club lengths, not closer to the hole, with a one stroke penalty.

Number of Teams
If enough players are identified to field a ten team league and establish a reasonable sub list we will have a ten team league. Otherwise we will reduce the number of teams to eight.

Subs and Prizes
Subs will be eligible to win hole prizes.  Subs who have completed 6 rounds or more during the season will be eligible for the year end flight tournament.

Scrambles and Hole 8
During league scrambles, all players will hit from the upper tee box when playing hole 8.

Results for Week 18, August 26

The results for week 18 are posted to the right.  Despite great weather scoring was not exceptional.  Perhaps a thick and long rough was a factor.  Keith Brown shot the only sub 40 round.  Sub Rich Hoebel shot the low net score with a 28.

Team Rieves took 5 points from team Raymer to win the second half title.  The playoff with team Molter is scheduled for September 2 and 4.  The results of those matches and individual titles will be shared at the banquet to be held on September 9.  The 2014 yearbook will be posted after the banquet.

Results for Week 17, August 19

The results for August 19 are posted to the right.  What looked to be an iffy forecast turned into a terrific night for golf.  The result was the best league scoring average for the season despite a disappointing night for several of us.  The flight tournaments have many in contention, although sandbagger Gibson has taken an early claim on flight three.

Steve McDonnell shot the best round of the night with a 36.  One shot behind were Matt Raymer and Keith Brown.  The low net came from sub Sasi Pillay with a net 25, with regular Dan Stanford shooting a net 26.

Team Raymer took the second half lead with a 5 point night, one point ahead of team Rieves.  Those two teams take on each other next week.  Team Molter has an outside chance at a two half sweep, but that is a long shot.

There is a good chance that the league banquet will be delayed a week until September 9.  We will wait to hear more from team Warren about that.

There are a significant number of rule issues for us to consider at the banquet.  I plan to provide a handout to everyone when they finish their week 18 round providing additional information, and will post the same information on this blog before the banquet.  I want to give everyone a chance to consider the options before we vote.  We have some iffy teams for next season, and a return to 8 teams will be one thing we discuss.

Results for Week 16, August 12

The results for August 12 are now posted.  Teams Molter and Rieves, who had separated a bit from the rest of the league, managed only 2.5 points between them and let others back in, notably team Raymer.  Should be interesting the final two weeks.

Sandbagger Gary Buehler shot a season low 46, net 26, to post the low net score of the week.  His net 26 matched those of sandbaggers Loew and Gibson from the previous week, setting up a tight battle for the thrid flight tournament title.  The other two levels are wide open.  Keith Brown had the low gross score with a 38.

Results for Week 15, August 5

The results for August 5 are posted to the right.  Our in-season tournament got off to a fine start with some nice weather, but a somewhat spartan turnout of just 33 players.  Only one player from team Warren appeared, but still managed one point, exceeding their second half weekly average.  With 3.5 points after 6 weeks, they may be on a record low pace.  Team Molter took advantage of two forfeits to collect 5 points, maintaining a one point lead.  Team Rieves, led by Lynn Paulson and Dave Rieves with a 35 and 37 respectively, kept pace with 5 hard-earned points of their own.

Shane Gibson and Cody Loew each shot a net 26, registering the low net scores of the night and taking the lead for the flight three tournament.  For those who had a bad night, remember that the tournament only counts your three best scores, meaning you could throw your August 5 score out with some good showings in the coming weeks.

In case it went unnoticed, the out-of-bounds stakes on hole 9 have been moved to the other side of the tree line.  Players who tend to hit shots to the right now have more room to work with.

2014 Flight Tournament

We have reached the last four weeks of regular season play, the league-wide Flight Tournament will begin on Tuesday, August 5. The rules are as follows.

  • To be eligible to win your flight, you must golf at least three of the final four weeks of the regular season.
  • At the end of Week 14, the league shall be split into three relatively even flights, based on handicap at that time. (The ideal composition would be flights of 13, 13, and 14 golfers, but it was not possible this year given the handicaps.) This year, Flight 1 will be golfers with a handicap of 10 or less, Flight 2 those with a handicap of 11 to 14, and Flight 3 those with a handicap of 15 or higher.
  • For purposes of the Flight Tournament, each golfer's handicap shall be frozen at their Week 15 handicap. That means that if your handicap is 14 for Week 15 matches, your Flight Tournament handicap will be 14. (This does not affect a golfer's weekly handicap for regular season match-ups, which may continue to change, based on their last 8 league scores.)
  • Each golfer's weekly Flight Tournament scores are calculated by subtracting his Flight Tournament handicap from his weekly raw scores.
  • Each golfer's total Flight Tournament score is the sum of the three lowest weekly Flight Tournament net scores.
  • The golfer within each flight with the lowest total Flight Tournament score is the tournament winner for that flight.
Here are the three flights for the tournament.

Results for Week 14, July 29

The results for a unique July 29 round are posted to the right.  First, the more positive news.

Steve McDonnell will be left to wonder what might have been without an extended rain delay (though he did fortify with a brat during the delay).  Steve parred the first four holes, got a 7 when he resumed his round on hole 5, and shot a 36.  Steve also had the low net score with a 27.  Keith Brown and Matt Raymer shot 37, with Matt shooting a net 28.  Team Molter had a 5 point night to take over the second half lead from team Rieves.  Team Raymer swept the hole prizes, with each player winning one hole.  What are the odds of that?

On the down side, a number of players chose to leave the course when a few raindrops fell.  The more committed players finished their rounds - at least one golfer from 8 of the 10 groups finished.  As a reminder to all, the league is on unless the course is closed or your Commissioner calls the round.  The in-season rules committee (Paulson-Raymer-Rieves) was convened and decided to enforce the league rules, resulting with a forfeit for all players who did not complete their rounds.  When both players in a match do not complete a round, no points are awarded.  Four points were awarded in the Kraus:Miller match, and three points were awarded in the Nelson:Warren match.  Players may leave if they wish, but that means a forfeit.

Results for Week 13, July 22

The results for July 22 are posted to the right.  It was a warm and humid evening - perfect for golf.

For the second time this season, super sub Caleb Hopkins took on a player who had his best score of the season.  This week, Shane Gibson shot a 43, net 25 - and lost by 4.  The combined net 46 has got to be a record (though on the night that former commissioner Wolfe shot a net 12 the combined score might have been better).  Keith Brown continued his solid play with a league low 35.

Team Kraus, no doubt devastated that their captain could not be troubled to make an appearance, was swept by team Molter, who moved into second place.  Team Rieves held on to first place, but showing its sense of fair play only managed 2 points against team Miller despite being the beneficiary of two forfeits.  It is good to give some other teams some sense of hope.

Your commissioner has finally gotten around to ordering prize balls for the 2014 season, and will start awarding them on July 29.  The cash prizes for the top three scramble teams will also be handed out to the teams captains.  Just to be certain each captain is completely honest, the prizes are $15 per player for scramble champion team Warren, $10 per player for runner-up team McEvilly, and $5 each for team Kraus.

Results for Week 12, July 15

The results for July 15 are posted to the right.  A gloomy day turned out to be a pleasant night for golf (though not nearly as warm as some of us like).

Mike Kraus impressed with a big bounce back round, leading the field with a net 27 and pacing his team to a 6 point sweep.  Team Kraus closed to within a point of the front-running Team Rieves in a likely futile attempt to gain the top spot.  The top two teams have separated themselves from the rest of the field with 6 weeks to go.  On the flip side, team Warren has been swept two weeks in a row, and is on pace for a 4.5 point second half.  I suspect that our scramble champion team will bounce back.

Dave Rieves continued his push to get back into the low average race with a 37, closely followed for the second straight week by Chris Weber with a 38.  In the match of the night, Ed Molter and Matt Raymer each shot 39, with Ed's net 28 resulting in a 2 stroke match victory.  Ed was disappointed that his score is not being published in the newspaper, but the world-wide audience for our blog will no doubt take notice of his excellent round.

Results for Week 11, July 8

The results for July 8 are posted to the right.  We nearly had our first 40 player night, with 39 this week.

Team Rieves continued its second half runaway, with captain Rieves leading the team to 6 points.  Dave had 4 birdies on his way to a 34, net 25, including chip-ins on holes 8 and 9 to finish with just 12 putts.  Chris Weber had 7 pars on his way to a 35, net 26.

Team Kraus is tied with team Raymer for a distant second, 2 whole points behind with just 7 weeks to go.  The success of team Kraus is amazing given that its captain has lost his first two matches by a likely historic 9 and 10 strokes respectively, and that teammates nearly came to blows this week when the second group hit into the first on hole 7.

In what may be another first, all four hole prizes were won by the first two groups (and that was with the prizes being determined before shots were hit).  If I hadn't seen the last group bring in the flags I might have suspected the second group did.

Results for Week 10 - July 1

And the second half is underway.  A nice night turned into sheets of rain for the last seven groups, but then things settled down and everyone finished.  Stung by being narrowly edged out by Team Molter is the first half, Team Rieves got off to a hot start with 5 points - aided by 2 Team Molter no shows.  The four teams within a point can dream their dreams, but I sense a Rieves runaway coming on.

Keith Brown shot the low score of the night with a 36 despite a double bogey on hole 9.  Pat Fahey shot a net 25.  Team Raymer put on a putting exhibition with two players posting 12 putts or less - Adam Hopkins (11) and Mike Sanders (12).   Mike was also nice enough to leave his wallet unattended in the clubhouse for an extended period, resulting in free drinks for a lucky few.  Nice guy that Mike.

Week 9 Results - June 17, and Scramble Results - June 24

OK, I'm back.  I imagine that many of you have been on the edge of your seats awaiting the week 9 results and the unveiling of the first half champion.  I will get to that shortly.  First and foremost, during my recent travels I have become used to be addressed as "Sir Lynn", and naturally will be expecting similar respect from league members from now on.

Before I get to week 9, there is a change from week 8.  The honorable Mike Warren notified me that he shot a 38 - not a 37 - during week 8.  That changed the results of his match and team points.  The updated week 8 results and standings are posted to the right.  As you will see, that change gave team Molter some breathing room heading into week 9, with a 2 point lead over team Rieves.

This finally brings us to week 9.  Team Kraus completed its typically futile end of the half dash with another 6 point week, vaulting it up to third place.  Team Rieves managed 5 points, putting the pressure on team Molter.  Undaunted, Team Molter also managed 5 points, and won the first half title.

Yanbing Lu posted the low score for the week with a 35.  Keith Brown shot a 37, and is the leader for low average at the season's half way point.  Michael Brania had the low net score with a 26.  Sub Nick Naus had a strong league debut with a 39 and winning two hole prizes.

Now, for the scramble results.  Team Warren was the only team to shoot under par with a 30.  Four teams shot even par.  Team McEvilly finished second thanks to 2 birdies.  Team Kraus grabbed third place with just 10 putts, thanks in part to a chip-in birdie by Captain Kraus on hole 9.  The team-by-team results follow.  Hole prizes were won by Pat Fahey (longest holed shot on #3), Dan Stanford (longest drive on #4), Charlie Hoslet (closest to pin in one on #6), and Team Warren (closest in two on #7).

Reminders:
  • You must count at least one tee shot from each member of your group. On your scorecard, note whose tee shot you use on each hole.
  • Count your putts on each hole, and note them on the scorecard.

Rules (for those unfamiliar with the scramble format):
  • Each foursome plays as a team and keeps one score for the team (including putts).
  • After each golfer tees off, the team picks one shot to play next, and each golfer hits from there. The three people whose shots won't be used should retrieve their balls and drop within a club-length of the ball chosen to be played, but if the ball you are playing is in the rough or a hazard you must play from that rough or hazard. You may improve your lie (winter rules).
  • Follow this same procedure until your team holes out.
  • When putting, the first person puts a mark down to identify where the others should putt from if the first person misses.
  • At least one tee shot from each golfer in the foursome must be used on one of the nine holes. You do not need to decide whose tee shot is to be used until after everybody has teed off on a hole, unless you are forced to use a specific golfer’s tee shot on holes 7, 8, or 9 because you have not used one of their tee shots yet.
