Mid-Winter Golf News

As the pros shake off the rust in Hawaii and California (and we continue to power up our snowblowers) there's some good old-fashioned Madison golf news:

Madison Parks Golf Courses realize net surplus in 2009
For the first time in years, the Madison Parks Golf Courses realized a net surplus of $256,000. Golf rounds increased by 1,400, and operational expenses were reduced by more effective and efficient staff assignments and scheduling.

“This is a significant milestone and it is another testament to management from Superintendent Kevin Briski on down,” Mayor Dave Cieslewicz said. “Madison Parks has done an outstanding job of managing and publicizing its four unique golf courses, as well as all the recreational opportunities it provides year round.”
“2009 was one of the best years of golf in almost 10 years,” says Kevin Briski, Madison Parks Superintendent. “Mother Nature provided great golfing conditions this summer. As many people stayed close to home, they rediscovered the great value of the Madison Parks golf courses.”
In 2009, revenues were up 2.9% while expenditures were reduced by 15%. Operational expenses were reduced by shifting 3 full-time golf maintenance employees into open and available general parks maintenance positions. While keeping course conditions and standards at a high level, seasonal staff was utilized for mowing. In addition to the staff cost reduction, debt service costs and supplies were also reduced.

Last year saw golf rounds increase by 1400, reversing an 8-year downward trend.

“The consistent and expanded marketing of the courses brought the message home to many new players this year,” added Ray Shane, Madison Parks Golf Supervisor.

In 2010, golfers can expect to see the same exceptional course conditions at a great price. Season passes and green fees will not increase. In fact, during the non-peak hours, the green fees will be discounted. Madison Parks golf courses remain the best deal in town with 72 challenging holes, 4 premiere courses, and all just steps from your front door!
