Week 1 Results

Well, we made it through Week 1 of the golf season and, in the sense that there were no major injuries, it was a success. Actually, I think some people must have installed putting greens in their basements over the winter. Twelve of the 29 established golfers (41%!) either tied or beat their handicap the first time out. Me? Not so much.

Below are some statistics and prize winners from 4/29. I’ll have results and standings posted later this week. Look for next week's pairings around Monday morning. The schedule for May 6 is on the right-hand side.

Average raw score: 48.2

Low raw score: 39 (Dave Rieves – apparently freed from the pressures of Commissionership)

Low net score: 27 (Doug Hoerr)

12-or-Less Putts: 11 (Bob Moritz – and he wasn’t too pleased about the 11th!), 12 (Lynn Paulson)

#2 Closest to Pin in 1 – Jeff Dvorak
#5 Longest Drive – Bruce Marble
#8 Closest to Pin in 1 – Tom Hidde
#9 Longest Putt – Dave Rieves

Again, we need more golfers! Until we are able to fill the former Hemberger team, we'll be filling that team with subs. Please help me recruit!

- Dave

Edit: Lynn Paulson also had 12-or-less putts (12)

4/29: Weiss vs Marble time change

In order to avoid any night putting, the April 29 match between the WEISS and MARBLE teams has been moved to 4:37 and 4:45. They will be the first group out that night. All other match-ups will occur at their originally noted times.
Lemme tell you a little story, I once knew a guy that could've been a great golfer, coulda gone pro, all he needed was a little time and some practice, decided to go to college instead, Went for 4 years, did pretty well. The end of his 4 years, it was his last semester, he was kicked out, you know what for? ...he was night putting, just ....putting ...at night .....with the 15 year old daughter of the dean.

Schedule confirmed; Still looking for a new team . . .

Gentlemen -

The 2008 league schedule has been confirmed and you can see Week 1's opponents in the upper-right hand corner of this page. I will post the pairings prior to the 29th.

The entire 2008 schedule (in spreadsheet form) can be found in the first link on the right side of this page.

Well, I'm still looking for a new team and captain to get us back to 10 teams. If you've got any leads, please let me know. I've emailed the one lead I got (Thanks, Dick), but haven't gotten a response from him yet.

One last note - on a suggestion, I'll be contacting the Glenway pro to see if we can possibly move our last match prior to the first match in Week 1, as it tends to get pretty dark pretty early in April. Or, you could always use one of these . . .

Greetings from the New Commish

Gentlemen –

As you've probably seen in an email from Former-Commissioner-for-Life Dave Rieves, I'll be taking over Commissioner duties from him beginning this summer, and I hope to do half as good a job as he has done.

There are a lot of things I need to learn to administer a league that’s seven years older than I am, and Dave will be helping me along the way. If there’s ever a time you think I could benefit from your input, I hope you’ll share it with me. There are myriad ways to contact me when I’m not looking for my ball in the trees (but I’m not going to list them here in the blog, as that would make it too easy for spammers to find me). I’ll send that information via email. One way you can contact me here is to leave a comment on this or any other of my posts.

Other League News: Two golfers have retired from the league this off-season (joining the Champions Tour, I presume). (Captain) Dick Hemberger and Larry Gradel will not return. I should note that these decisions were made independent to my becoming Commissioner, so please save the rats/sinking ship analogies!

That leads us to our . . . FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS!

As Dave mentioned, we’ll need to recruit (or somehow form) an entire new team and captain for this season. If you know of anybody who may be interested in forming or joining a team, please let me know ASAP. I have put together a quick info sheet (click that link or the one on the right of this page) you can send or print off so you won’t have to explain everything to them. Obviously, UW employees will be given preferred status, but that dam’s already been busted by our team, so it’s not a concrete requirement.

Get those clubs dusted off! We tee off in 17 days!

What is this Blog?

Gentlemen -

I've created this blog as a way to communicate weekly pairings and results, and other information to the members of the UW Employee Golf League.

So far I’ve published the League History, a tentative 2008 schedule, some rules of play I’ve gleaned from Dave’s previous publication, and more. You can find those links on the right-hand side of the blog. I’ll be posting pairings, results, handicaps, and whatever else I think might be useful or of interest. If you have any suggestions for the blog, please let me know.

Thanks.

- Dave
