2013 Subs Available

Here is a list of very available subs for this season.  At least some of them (Dave, Dave, Steve, and Michael) are interested in being a full-time golfer.  Out of fairness, I list them in order of number of weeks golfed last year.

The good news is it should be easy to expand back to 10 teams in 2014.

2013 Season News

Greetings, Golfers!  There’s a lot of change in store for 2013, so please read this entire message.

CHANGE 1: Contraction for 2013
There are two teams who had issues fielding teams this year, and so we are going to temporarily contract to 8 teams for this season, with an eye toward expanding back to 10 teams in 2014.  An 8-team league will result in a shorter season, too, which is outlined below.
CHANGE 2: Schedule for 2013
Given that a double-round-robin schedule for 8 teams takes only 14 weeks (as opposed to 18 weeks), we can shorten the season a bit at the front and back ends.  Here, then, is our new schedule for 2013:
  • April 30: League Exhibition Scramble  This is one week later than the previously-advertised start tot he season.  (This will allow everyone to golf with their teammates the first time out, and shake off the winter’s rust in a mostly non-competitive manner.)
  • May 7 – June 18: First Half
  • June 25: League Scramble and Drink-a-Thon, Extremely Ultra-Competitive!
  • July 2: Bye Week.  Happy 4th of July.  U!S!A!
  • July 9 – August 20: Second Half
  • As scheduled by Pennant Winners: League Championship Round
  • August 27 OR September 3: League Banquet
CHANGE 3: Tee Time Intervals
The city is changing tee time intervals to 9 minutes (as opposed to 7.5 minutes previously).  That means that our first tee time will now be 4:48 and our last tee time 5:51.  Early and late, we’ll move that up one tee time to 4:39 – 5:42, if possible.
CHANGE 4: Awesome Golfers Available
Due to the contraction of two teams, there are at least two displaced golfers who would like to join teams full-time – Dave Rieves and (returning Champion) Dave Downing.  If any of you have room for them, please let me and them know ASAP.  I’m not trying to play favorites, here, but Dave Rieves did dedicate 22 summers to being your League Commissioner, so I sure hope we can find him a full-time spot.
If we cannot find permanent spots for them, please consider them to be super-subs, along with Michael Brania, who was also hoping to join a team this year after subbing much of last year.  I’ll get you all their contact info.

Letter to Golfers from Bill Scheer

Dear League Members:

Instead of the usual league letter outlining the season, this is one of good-bye! Unfortunately, as I am sure you’re aware, the City of Madison Parks Dept. decided to not renew any of the golf pro’s contracts, and will take over the management of the courses themselves.

Because this proposal was so hastily brought forth, the City Golf Committee voted unanimously for a one year moratorium on this issue. Unfortunately, that committee is advisory only, and we ultimately lost the vote 10-9 at the City Council meeting.

I would like to thank all of you for you support and friendship over the years. I would also like to thank all the people who spoke at meetings and wrote letters to alders and city administrators on our behalf. Your support of the pro’s and your opposition to the City’s plan was tremendous. I loved working at Glenway and will always cherish the wonderful times I had with a wonderful clientele.

I am lucky to have found a position that will allow me to follow my passion for teaching. I will be the Director of Instruction at Bridges Golf Course in Madison, so I hope to see you there sometime.

Again, thank you for 14 great years, and best of luck to you and your league this coming season.

Best Regards,

 Bill Scheer

2013 Season Begins April 23!

Hi folks -

Sorry for the late start.  I could bore you with how busy I've been, but I would be boring me, too.  Let's shank some drives!

I've heard form the City of Madison Parks and Rec, and we are approved to start our 56th year on Tuesday, April 23.  There are a couple changes to note for this season, related to tee times.
  • The city is moving to 9-minute intervals between tee times this year (from 7.5-minute intervals).
  • Our first tee time will be either 4:39 (early and late season) or  4:48 (most of the season).
  • This means the last tee time will be 6:18, rather than 6:00, for much of the season.  If the league decides they would prefer it, I might be able to get the 4:39 start time every week, which would make the last tee time 6:00 again.  I'm open to suggestions.
This also means I have to update my schedule spreadsheet, which I will do ASAP, but here are Week 1 matchups:
  • 4:39/4:48 Nelson vs. McEvilly
  • 4:57/5:06 Miller vs. Molter
  • 5:15/5:24 Moritz vs. Weber
  • 5:33/5:42 Warren vs. Rieves
  • 5:51/6:00 Wolfe vs. Kraus
