Rule and Process Changes

We had a good turnout at our league banquet and had an excellent conversation about potential rule changes.  The concensus was that there will be no change to how weekly pairings will be established.  A description of new rules for next season follow.  A note on the unplayable lies rule - Keith Brown was right that the official rules provide another option (and I learned something new - thanks Keith).  However, our new rule is more advantageous for players, and a single approach will result in a consistent approach for all.  Please contact me if you believe I got anything wrong.

Winter Rules
Play the ball where it lies.  Any player wishing to improve his lie can do so with a one stroke penalty using the unplayable lies rule described below.

Lost Balls
For a ball lost anywhere on the course, a player will drop a ball with a one stroke penalty anywhere along a line on which the shot was hit.  Players should not take longer than 2 minutes to locate a ball.

Balls Out of Bounds
For balls deemed to be out of bounds on the right hand side of holes 1, 2, 6, 8, or 9, a player will drop a ball with a one stroke penalty anywhere along a line from where the shot was hit to where it went out of bounds.

For balls hit out of bounds over the green on holes 2, 5, 8, or 9, players will drop within two club lengths of the tree line, closer to the hole, where the ball crossed the out-of-bounds line.  The ball may be placed closer to the hole in this situation because the shot will still be difficult and because determining the closest location not closer to the hole will be difficult and may slow down play.

Balls in Woods on Hole 7
If a player hits a ball into the woods on hole 7 and does not locate the ball within one minute, the player will drop a ball with a one stroke penalty anywhere along a line from where the shot was hit to where it went into the trees.  If a player is able to quickly locate his ball in the woods, he has the option of hitting the ball where it lies or taking a drop and one stroke penalty as described above.

Unplayable Lies
A player may determine a lie to be unplayable at any time (this most frequently occurs when a ball is located underneath a pine tree).  If a player determines a lie is unplayable, he will go to the nearest point of relief, not closer to the hole, with unobstructed access to the fairway (but not necessarily the green).  From there, the player would take a drop within two club lengths, not closer to the hole, with a one stroke penalty.

Number of Teams
If enough players are identified to field a ten team league and establish a reasonable sub list we will have a ten team league. Otherwise we will reduce the number of teams to eight.

Subs and Prizes
Subs will be eligible to win hole prizes.  Subs who have completed 6 rounds or more during the season will be eligible for the year end flight tournament.

Scrambles and Hole 8
During league scrambles, all players will hit from the upper tee box when playing hole 8.
