Week 15 Results & Important News

Week 15 results are now posted.  There's a change at the top for the first time in a few weeks, as the Warren team moves into 1st place with three weeks to go.  There are lots of teams still in it, though.
  • The league banquet, hosted by the captain of the 2011 league champion team - Pat McEvilly - will once again be at Paisan's restaurant, on Tuesday, September 4 (day after Labor Day).  Please sign up with, and pay, Pat McEvilly for the privilege of dining with him.  Paisan's - you may remember - has free (validated) parking beginning at 4:45 and great Happy Hour specials beginning at 5:00.
  • Next Tuesday we begin to use the early tee times.  The first match-up will go out at 3:52 and 4:00, and every other foursome is two tee times earlier than they would ordinarily be.  This week it's the Moritz and Nelson teams that go out early.  Captains - please make sure your golfers know this.  Also, the 3:52 foursome should take the prize flags out.
    • For August 21, the early tee times go to Weber and Warren.
    • For August 28, the early tee times go to McEvilly and Rieves.
  • Week 1 standings for the 2012 Flight Tournament are here.
  • With three weeks left, the updated Sy Brandt top 5 are as follows:

Week 15 Pairings - August 7 (Tournament Begins)

The four-week 2012 Flight Tournament begins this week.  Please see the post below for details.

Please note that next week we will begin teeing off earlier.  I will check with the clubhouse and see what our options are.  In years past, we could only move two groups up to the 3:52/4:00 tee times.  Since the league before us is now smaller, we may have other options.

Meanwhile, days are getting short.  The first group has to get out on time.  Make sure you keep up with the group in front of you.  If you see you're falling behind, speed up!  Eliminate practice swings and shorten pre-shot routines.  Get to your ball and be ready to hit when it's your turn.  Remember, in league play, ready golf is more important than proper etiquette.

The Moritz team now has a 3-point lead in its quest to not have to play a championship match.  The Warren team sits in 2nd and the Miller team is behind them.  For the second straight week, the top two teams in the standings will face off - this time in the last match-up of the night.

Here are the updated Sy Brandt Sportsmanship Award standings, with four weeks to go.

  1. 24.35 Steve Moritz
  2. 23.08 Mike Sanders

2012 Flight Tournament

During the last four weeks of regular season play, the league-wide Flight Tournament will be held. The rules are as follows.
  • To be eligible to win your flight, you must golf at least three of the final four weeks of the regular season.
  • At the end of Week 14, the league shall be split into three relatively even flights, based on handicap at that time. (The ideal composition would be flights of 13, 13, and 14 golfers, but it may not be possible given the handicaps.) For example, Flight 1 may be golfers with a handicap of 11 or less, Flight 2 those with a handicap between 12 and 15, and Flight 3 those with a handicap of 16 or higher.
  • For purposes of the Flight Tournament, each golfer's handicap shall be frozen at their Week 15 handicap. That means that if your handicap is 11 for Week 15 matches, your Flight Tournament handicap will be 11. (This does not affect a golfer's weekly handicap for regular season match-ups, which may continue to change, based on their last 8 league scores.)
  • Each golfer's weekly Flight Tournament scores are calculated by subtracting his Flight Tournament handicap from his weekly raw scores.
  • Each golfer's total Flight Tournament score is the sum of the three lowest weekly Flight Tournament (net) scores.
  • The golfer within each flight with the lowest total Flight Tournament score is the tournament winner for that flight.
Here are the three flights for the tournament.

Flight 1 (Handicap < 11)

Week 10 Results

That was a bit warm.  Thirty-five hardy golfers paid homage to this great country on 4th of July Eve by beating the heat into submission.  Duty, Honor, Beer Carts.  The average score was the second-lowest of the year.

A note from the Pro Shop: It is a crime to carry alcohol onto the course.  Please do not commit crimes.

In Week 10, the Wolfe Team destroyed the Weber Team to take the early 2nd-half lead.  The Miller Team did alright (not as well as the Wolfe Team, I should point out) and they are in 2nd place, practically out of the pennant race.

Results and Standings are posted over there ->, as usual.

Scramble Results - The Warren Commission

Congratulations to the Warren team (Captain Mike, Dave Downing, Jeff Dvorak, and Jake Holler) for winning their second straight league scramble, with a score of three under par 29 (same as last year).  This can only be explained by a subversion of the rules.  A tournament official will be sure to escort the Warren team at next year's scramble.

The Moritz team (Captain Bob, Tom Hidde, ringer Steve Hineline, and Paul Schuettler) lost the tiebreaker to the Warrens last year at 29, and finished in 2nd outright this year with a 2-under par 30.  I suspect they'd be willing to provide the Warren escort.

A third place tie at one under 31 was broken by the third tiebreaker, as the Miller team beat out the defending league champion McEvilly team by fewest putts, 11-15. (Speaking of repeat performances, this is the second straight year the defending league champion lost the 3rd place tiebreaker.)

Fifth place saw a three-way tie by teams which - if they wanted to be named in this blog - should have taken one less shot.

Some other teams participated, but not necessarily in a way that should be celebrated.  Birdies are in read and bogeys in blue below.

Place Strokes 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Score
1 Warren 4 2 3 4 4 3 4 2 3 29
2 Moritz 3 3 2 4 4 3 4 3 4 30
T3* Miller 5 3 3 3 4 3 4 2 4 31
T3 McEvilly 3 3 3 4 4 3 4 4 3 31
T5 Kraus 3 4 3 4 5 2 4 3 4 32
T5 Weber 4 3 3 3 5 4 4 2 4 32
T5 Molter 4 3 3 4 4 4 4 3 3 32
8 Wolfe 4 3 4 5 5 3 4 3 3 34
T9 Nelson 4 3 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 35
T9 Rieves 4 4 3 5 5 2 5 3 4 35

 * Wins tiebreaker on putts (11-15)

Each golfer on the winning team wins a $15 prize, with $10 each for 2nd place golfers and $5 each for 3rd place golfers.

  • Winners of the hole prizes ($5 each) are as follows:
  • Longest holed shot on #3: Steve Hineline (Moritz team)
  • Longest drive in fairway #4: Matt Abraham (Nelson team)
  • Closest tee shot to pin on #6: Lynn Paulson (Kraus team)
  • Closest second shot to pin on #7: Matt Abraham (Nelson team)
 Other notes:
  • No eagles this year.
  • Good news: 16 birdies this year, up from 11 last year.  Fairways made of concrete can't hurt.
  • Bad news: 17 bogeys this year, up from 10 last year.
  • Birdie-free holes: Only numbers 5 and 7.  (Last year all the par fours were birdied, but three of the par threes were not.)
  • Bogey-free holes: Only #9.
This officially concludes our halftime entertainment. The race for the second-half pennant begins Tuesday, to see who will take on the Moritz team in the championship.
