Banquet is Tuesday!

The 2011 season ends with the league banquet on Tuesday, September 6 at Paisan's Restaurant. Cocktail hour begins at 5:00 and dinner begins at 6:00. If you haven't paid yet, you can still attend. Please let me (dwolfe5001@hotmail.com) know you're coming so we can get an accurate head-count for the pizza makers. Regulars and subs are all welcome!

Paisan's is at 131 West Wilson Street and has free parking beginning at 5:00 p.m.

In golfing news . . .

Congratulations to the Moritz team, who held on by the slimmest of margins to edge the Kraus team for the second half championship. It came down to the final match-up of the night, which was finished in near darkness. Paul Schuettler pulled away from Matt Blouin to grab a poitn and the team points for Moritz. That was enough to give the Moritz team a 34.5-34.0 victory over the Kraus team, who pulled in 5.5 points in their match-up.

Results of the League Championship match between the McEvilly and Moritz teams will be announced Tuesday at the banquet.

The tournament standings can be viewed here. The far-right column shows the sum of the best two scores for each golfer who's played at least twice. I have sorted each flight by this number. The "Score" column to the left of that shows each golfer's three-round score.

It looks like Brad Nelson has a stranglehold (cue the Ted Nugent) on the Sy Brandt Sportsmanship Award. Nothing short of an "accident" or a last-second computer glitch will vault the much-deserving runner-up to the top spot. Does anybody have Jeff Gillooly's phone number?

I got caught up on results and standings, and will update the flight tournament and Sy Brandt standings as soon as I can. (The results assume that the "Charlie" who golfed on the McEvilly team in week 16 was Charlie Ponti. If this is incorrect, please let me know.)

With one week to go, it appears it's a three-team race (with a 4th team still alive) for the second half championship, and the right to take on what's left of the McEvilly team for the league championship. I'll have (unofficial) final standings available Tuesday night so the winning captain can schedule the championship match-ups prior to Labor Day.

Flight Tournament

If you're looking for week 14 results, they're below.

During the last four weeks of regular season play, the league-wide Flight Tournament will be held. The rules are as follows.

To be eligible to win your flight, you must golf at least three of the final four weeks of the regular season.
At the end of Week 14, the league shall be split into three relatively even flights, based on handicap at that time. (The ideal composition would be flights of 13, 13, and 14 golfers, but it may not be possible given the handicaps.) For example, Flight 1 may be golfers with a handicap of 11 or less, Flight 2 those with a handicap between 12 and 15, and Flight 3 those with a handicap of 16 or higher.
For purposes of the Flight Tournament, each golfer's handicap shall be frozen at their Week 15 handicap. That means that if your handicap is 11 for Week 15 matches, your Flight Tournament handicap will be 11. (This does not affect a golfer's weekly handicap for regular season match-ups, which may continue to change, based on their last 8 league scores.)
Each golfer's weekly Flight Tournament scores are calculated by subtracting his Flight Tournament handicap from his weekly raw scores.
Each golfer's total Flight Tournament score is the sum of the three lowest weekly Flight Tournament (net) scores.
The golfer within each flight with the lowest total Flight Tournament score is the tournament winner for that flight.

Week 14 Results

Results for Week 14 are now posted. The Kraus team put a little distance between themselves and the 2nd place McEvillies, beating them head-to-head 4-2. This Tuesday was our lowest league average so far this year - 43.3. Having Travis back didn't hurt that cause!

A few reminders:

The league banquet will be held on Tuesday, September 6 at a location to be determined by the 2010 league champion Nelson team. Look for more information soon from Captain Brad.
The flight tournament begins next week. For more information on our own "Fed Ex Cup" read here about last year's tournament.
Days are getting shorter, and we're less and less likely each week to get all 10 foursomes before it gets dark. Beginning in week 15, the first tee times will be at 3:52 and 4:00 rather than 4:52 and 5:00. All other groups will move up two tee times. That has a pretty significant impact on six teams (shown below). Please let me know if it is not possible for you to do the 3:52/4:00 tee times and we'll see if someone else can. It is at times like these that I will adhere to the number one rule passed down to me from Hall of Fame Commissioner Dave Rieves: "Be flexible."

August 16: Warren and Miller teams will be at 3:52/4:00.
August 23: Molter and Wolfe teams will be at 3:52/4:00.
August 30: Nelson and Weber teams will be at 3:52/4:00.

Week 13 Results

The Kraus team swept their way into first place with a net 15 under par in week 13. Next week, they take on 2nd place McEvilly in the nightcap. Let's golf quick so they can get in before dark.

Besides the great rounds last week, led by David Miller's 35 (net 22), there are a couple other people I should mention. Dave Rieves scored a 38, but his scorecard came in after Bill had already called the scores in to the paper. Steve Moritz eagled the first hole, apparently sinking a 10-foot putt after his tee shot.

Next week is the final week prior to the flight tournament, which is weeks 15-18.

Statewide Recount Complete - McEvilly Still Wins

Now that all scores have been accounted for and the Waukesha County Clerk has verified handicaps, it is official. The McEvilly team has won a heated battle with the Webers for the first half championship, by a score of 39.0 - 37.5. The rest of the league is hardly worth mentioning - finishing no closer than 10 points behind the Webers.

This week's pairings are below.

No results, yet, from last week because some golfers did not finish their rounds. As a reminder, unless the course closes, we will continue to golf. The clubhouse guys have their eyes on the radar and know when we can and cannot golf. Last Tuesday, after about five minutes of fairly heavy rain, we were able to finish in nice weather. Unfortunately, some had already left.

Provided everyone finishes their round this week, I should have all results and standings from weeks 9-11 up by the weekend.

For the first time in the (recent) history of the league scramble, the weather the perfect, the golfing was (sort of) good, and there were no scramble-related controversies. Therefore, I have no whimsical words or fun stories to express what happened. So, apropos of nothing, I'll just quote golf philosopher Al Cervik: "So what? So let's dance!"

Congratulations to the Warren team (Captain Mike Warren, Taylor DeValk , Jeff Dvorak, and Tim Mattes) for winning the 3rd annual league scramble, with a score of three under par 29. They tied the Moritz team (Keith Brown, Tom Hidde, Steve Moritz, and Paul Schuettler) at 29, and were still tied after the eagle and birdie tiebreakers. I was very hopeful we’d get to the dueling pistols, but the tie was broken by the number of putts (Warren 13, Moritz 14).

A third place tie at one under 31 was broken by the first tiebreaker, as the Kraus team (Captain Mike Kraus, Lynn Paulson, Steve Smith, and Andy Taylor) scored an eagle on #9 to no eagles for the defending league champion Nelson team. Fifth went to the Wolfe team via the second tiebreaker – number of birdies (1) over the Weber team.

Reminders:

You must count at least one tee shot from each member of your group. On your scorecard, note whose tee shot you use on each hole.
Count your putts on each hole, and note them on the scorecard.
Get some damn birdies!

Rules (for those unfamiliar with the scramble format):

Each foursome plays as a team and keeps one score for the team (including putts).
After each golfer tees off, the team picks one shot to play next, and each golfer hits from there. The three people whose shots won't be used should retrieve their balls and drop within a club-length of the ball chosen to be played, but if the ball you are playing is in the rough or a hazard you must play from that rough or hazard. You may improve your lie (winter rules).
Follow this same procedure until your team holes out.
When putting, the first person puts a mark down to identify where the others should putt from if the first person misses.
At least one tee shot from each golfer in the foursome must be used on one of the nine holes. You do not need to decide whose tee shot is to be used until after everybody has teed off on a hole, unless you are forced to use a specific golfer’s tee shot on holes 7, 8, or 9 because you have not used one of their tee shots yet.

(Unofficial) Congratulations to the McEvilly team for (unofficially) winning the first half! They went into the night with a 2-point lead over the Weber team, and (unofficially) scored five points to (unofficially) put the top spot out of reach.

Time for the scramble next Tuesday. I got the $12 cookout fee from most of you last night (and regrets from a few others). I'll catch up with the rest of you next Tuesday. If you have a sub for the scramble, please tell them about the cookout and let them know they can pay me Tuesday. Thanks.

UPDATE: The cost for the cookout will be $12 per person. I will be offering a special government employee rate of $11.92. Please bring cash or check this Tuesday if you can.

What do the Miller, Molter, Moritz, Nelson and Wolfe teams all have in common? They were all mathematically eliminated from winning the first-half title on Tuesday. We're one week away from the end of the first half, and only the Weber and McEvilly teams are left standing, with McEvilly holding a two-point lead.

Overall, times weren't too bad last night. I was in the last group, and we teed off a full 10 minutes after our scheduled tee time. We finished the round in 2:20, though which isn't bad.

Great rounds last night by Ralph Stamler (35), Keith Brown (37), Bob Moritz (39), and Dave Rieves (39).

Next week I'll be there in time to catch the early groups and will be collecting for the cookout. I'll post the cost when I find out.

Tuesday's match-ups are posted below. Before you check them out, though, please read the following important notes.

There have been a couple slow groups the last two weeks - as in 2:40 rounds instead of 2:10. If you're not keeping up with the group in front of you, you need to get to your ball quickly, be ready to hit when it's your turn, and eliminate your pre-shot routine.

The LEAGUE SCRAMBLE will be held in two weeks. The LEAGUE COOKOUT will follow immediately. I will begin collecting for the (optional) cookout this Tuesday. I don't have an official cost, but I expect it will be about $11, with tax and tip included. (Here's the info from last year - I expect it will be about the same: The $11 covers brats, burgers, potato salad, beans, chips, dessert, tax, and tip. It does not cover your beverages. Food will be served around 7:30/7:45.)

Clearly, Mr. Snow Miser and Mr. Heat Miser are using us as pawns in some eternal battle for domination of Wisconsin. This Tuesday, Mr. Heat Miser won out.

So, umm, this is a little embarrassing. Tuesday night, when score cards were turned into me, I was stunned by the scores of a Kraus-Miller foursome, to the point that I read them aloud to the rest of the lingerers - 33, 34, 34, and 37! I dutifully added those awesome scores to Chris Weber's slightly less awesome 38 and handed them to Bill Scheer to phone into the newspaper.

I was equally stunned when I started entering their scores into my spreadsheet and found their actual scores were 40, 40, 44, and 45. Good scores, to be sure, but maybe not newspaper-worthy. It turns out I was reading their net scores, which they had written on the card. So Lynn, Andy, Doug, and Jeff - I take back all the wonderful things I said about your scores (and now you know why I was making a big deal about them).

So, actual results and standings are now posted on the blog. The Millers used a sweep to catapult past the Webers into first place, but it's tight, with the McEvillys right behind. It's very early, though, and nobody is more than two sweeps from first.

I still need the $25 entry fee from a few of you - catch you next week.

Also, some foursomes did not write their finish time on the cards. Please remind the scorekeepers in your foursome of this responsibility next week. Times were pretty good, and the groups were pretty close together, but the last group still came in under pretty dark skies.

The Coldest Winter I Ever Saw . . .

So, Week 2 is in the books (Week 1 having peeked out from its hole, seen its shadow, and crawled back in).

Despite the season starting one week late, it crept up on me and I was woefully unprepared. Thankfully, the league - beginning it's 54th season - is practically on autopilot now, and nary a death (or even injury) was reported Tuesday night. Success!

Apparently the 2011 golf styles range from khaki shorts to five layers of clothing and stocking caps. I saw several hats that, I believe, came with free bowls of soup.

Who was unfazed by the Arctic blast? The Daves! Delveaux and Rieves (not Wolfe - have you not been paying attention?) posted a 38 and 39, respectively, to lead the way. In addition, Lynn Paulson, Andy Taylor, and Chris Weber rolled in at 40.

The newly constructed Weber team, along with the Kraus team, jump out to an early lead in the standings - each gaining 9.5 points over the first two weeks.

However, none of that matters. What is really astounding is that the final group on Tuesday came in before the sun went down! Times were pretty good Tuesday. There were a couple large gaps between groups. I'll collect the data for the first half of the season and see if any trends emerge. Thanks for keeping the pace up in week 1. Let's continue to keep it up once the sun comes out.

Note to Chris Weber: Thanks for the beer after our round. I bought you one, too, but you were gone so I drank it. The way I see it, we're even.

Rule Changes for 2011

If you're looking for the Week 1 Pairings, they're below.

Here are the changes for the 2011 season. These were passed at last season's banquet.

Maximum Strokes: In order to help speed up play, the maximum score for any hole on the course will be 5 over par. That means that, for the par 3’s, the highest score you can record is an 8. For the par 4’s, the highest score you can record is a 9.

The important corollary to this rule is that –once you reach the maximum for a hole – you must pick up your ball and prepare for the next hole. Teammates, Captains, and Opponents must help enforce this rule to speed up play.
Previous scores (from last year, etc.) will be adjusted, based on this new rule, such that your handicap will be based on the new scoring system.

Handicap Calculation: We have slightly modified the calculation of golfer handicaps to encourage a downward trend (i.e. better golfing).

Previously, the handicap was the difference between your average score and par 32 (i.e. if your average was 41.7, your handicap was 9.7, which is rounded to 10).
Under the revised calculation, we will multiple that number by 95% to determine your handicap. In practice, this means that your handicap will either (a) stay the same as under the old rule or (b) decrease by one stroke.
If you’re confused, don’t worry about it, my spreadsheet will handle the calculation!

Slow Play: In an attempt to define the “slow play” problem that has plagued the league and driven away some golfers, we are going implement a clubhouse “check-in” for each foursome as they come off the 9th green. I will designate a person in each foursome to check in with the clubhouse attendant when your foursome finishes its round. The attendant will mark the time. For groups 2-10 we will be able to see how much time elapsed between them and the previous group. For now, we’ll do nothing with this information other than capture and analyze it. We hope it will give us empirical evidence of any chronically slow golfers, in the hope of helping them recognize the problem so they can speed up.

Rules Committee: We will institute a “Rules Committee” to help the Commish out with any spontaneous, unprecedented issues. Dave Rieves and Lynn Paulson have volunteered to serve on this committee.

Greetings golfers!

I have posted the league schedule for 2011 (see Links on the right-hand side of the blog) and the first week match-ups. We begin play on April 26. That's a Tuesday for those of you with short memories.

You'll notice some new team names, due to both attrition and violent overthrows.

The former Loescher team lost the Johns, Loescher and Lobe. Ed Molter has agreed to be the team captain, and his first move was to trade a mashie niblick and a bag of tees for 2010 rookies Matt Raymer and Adam Rieves.
The recipient of the niblick is new captain Mike Warren, who ascended to power in a bloody coup of the Dvorak regime. Warren is adding a couple new golfers to his team.
Shawn McGettigan has jumped ship to the league that plays before us. Chris Weber will take over the team and has added two new golfers to his team.
By law of adverse possession, the Williams team has become the Dave Rieves team.

I still haven't heard from all the captains, so I'll be making some calls this week to make sure the league is completely filled.

I'll be putting more information out as quickly as I can, with the rule changes we enacted being next to come.

Oh, there's way too much madcap adventure to recap here. You'll have to come to the banquet to get the lowdown. In all my (three) years of commissionerizing, I've never seen a finish quite like this.

Matt doesn't know!), but we also discuss and vote on potential rule changes to improve the league. In other words, it's about the only time all year that I'll listen to your opinions. ;)

Just two teams remain in contention for the second half pennant and the chance to meet Team Nelson in the championship. It's been a dogfight (no, not the Michael Vick kind) between these two teams for eight weeks now. Here is the first place team for each week of the second half.

On the strength of a sweep this week, the Moritz team takes a 3 point lead into the final week and a head-to-head match-up (4:52/5:00, for you members of the press) with the Loescher team, with half the marbles on the line. Team Moritz needs just 1.5 to clinch a second half tie. (Don't worry, there will be established tiebreakers!)

As for week 17, what a crappy bunch of golfers we were! Only two golfers - Dave Rieves and Bob Moritz - broke 40 with their 39's. The lowest net score was just 5 under par. The average score was higher than it's been since week 9.

Keep checking this post for updates on the flight tournament and the Sy Brandt Sportsmanship Award. I'll update them as I can.

In Flight 1, Chris Weber holds a slight lead among currently eligible golfers. Watch out for sleeper Andy Taylor, who will be in the hunt with a solid third score. (Remember, you must post rounds in three of the final four weeks to be eligible to win.)
In Flight 2, Matt Blouin holds a three-stroke lead over the field, but Dave Miller is the sleeper here. His two scores are right in line with Matt's.
In Flight 3, Bob Crowe has a massive lead over the field. Someone's going to have to go real low to beat him.

Update 2: The Sy Brandt standings are below. I have failed to take much advantage of Mr. Schuettler's two-week absence, but still have a chance to win.

The date and location of the banquet for the 53rd year of the Tuesday Night Glenway Golf Course UW Employee Men’s Golf League have been set by the 2009 league champion Miller team! (I guess that makes it Miller Time.) Below is the pertinent information.

Week 16 Recap

Alright, now we're getting down to the nitty gritty. With two weeks left in the second half, there was another change at the top of the leader board. Turns out the Wolfe team may be kingmakers after all.

In week 15, the Moritz team jumped into first by sweeping the Wolfe team.
In week 16, the Loescher team took their turn battering the same team for 5 points, moving them back into first place.

The Loescher team now holds a two point lead over the Moritz team, and a 6.5 point lead over the third place Kraus team.

The field was led this week by first-time golfer Yanbing (Bing) Lu - the only bright spot on my team - who shot a 36 in his first round at Glenway. Lynn Paulson, Dave Rieves, and Andy Taylor shot 37's, while Scott Gomez, Mike Warren, and Chris Weber shot 39's.

Flight tournament results (so far) can be found here, sorted by average net score at this point. Remember, a golfer must play at least three of the last four weeks to be eligible.

UW Men's League Disbanded!

After 52-and-a-half glorious years of exercise and camaraderie, the UW Men's Tuesday Night Golf League has disbanded. The final straw, apparently, was the mathematical elimination from the playoffs - in week 16 - of the team captained by 3rd-year commissioner Dave Wolfe.

Wolfe reportedly muttered, "If we can't be in the championship, there's really no point to the league. "

"What - the Nelson team?", he asked with an unbelieving chortle. "Like those poseurs could polish our pitching wedges! And the second half? Loescher, Moritz, Moritz, Loescher. Who really gives a *#^$&?"

Wolfe was last seen curled up in the fetal position in the deep woods right of the 7th fairway, clutching a dozen brand new Taylormade Burner golf balls. He suggested the dedicated golfers of the league all find something else to do on Tuesday nights, and just leave him alone.

I won't have time to post the complete results and standings until sometime Sunday. For now, here's a brief recap.

The Moritz team, with its second straight 6-point week, swept its way into first place, now holding a two point lead over the Loescher team and a 6.5 lead over the Kraus team.

Chris Weber set the new league low for the season with a 33. Rumor is mosquitos carried his tee shot all the way to the green on #7.

Paul Schuettler strengthened his Sy Brandt Award lead, playing like the old Tiger while the other contenders played like the new Tiger.

After one week, the early leaders in the flight tournament are Chris Weber (flight 1), Doug Hoerr (flight 2), and a tie between Bob Crowe and Herb Stanford (flight 3).

2010 League Flight Tournament

If you're looking for week 14 results, they're below.

During the last four weeks of regular season play, the league-wide Flight Tournament will be held. The rules are as follows.

To be eligible to win your flight, you must golf at least three of the final four weeks of the regular season.
At the end of Week 14, the league shall be split into three relatively even flights, based on handicap at that time. (The ideal composition would be flights of 13, 13, and 14 golfers, but it may not be possible given the handicaps.) For example, Flight 1 may be golfers with a handicap of 11 or less, Flight 2 those with a handicap between 12 and 15, and Flight 3 those with a handicap of 16 or higher.
For purposes of the Flight Tournament, each golfer's handicap shall be frozen at their Week 15 handicap. That means that if your handicap is 11 for Week 15 matches, your Flight Tournament handicap will be 11. (This does not affect a golfer's weekly handicap for regular season match-ups, which may continue to change, based on their last 8 league scores.)
Each golfer's weekly Flight Tournament scores are calculated by subtracting his Flight Tournament handicap from his weekly raw scores.
Each golfer's total Flight Tournament score is the sum of the three lowest weekly Flight Tournament (net) scores.
The golfer within each flight with the lowest total Flight Tournament score is the tournament winner for that flight.

Week 14 Recap

Well, that was a bit sweaty. Well done on the ready golf, though. The final pairings made it in before dark. This was our last week with a 6:00 tee time, but we're still going to struggle to get everyone in before dark unless we keep up a good pace.

The Loescher team continues to fend off all other contenders, scoring five to maintain a 2-point lead over the Moritz team (who swept), and 6.5 points over the Kraus team (who ran into the juggernaut that is the Wolfe team).

The heat must have been an equalizer this week, as nobody went real low, but there were four 38's and another three 39's. Props to my teammate Adam Hopkins, who set a new Wolfe team record with a 38. New Dvorak team member Adam Rieves also beat his previous low by 11 strokes with his own 38 (also winning low net with an 18). Pat McEvilly and Dave Rieves also shot 38's. However, the league average scores went up for the 4th straight week.

Week 13 Recap - Hit the Ball!

Summer's waning. Know how I know? I couldn't see my golf ball on #9 (the ONE shot I hit straight) after I hit it last night because it was too dark out. It was dark out because it was so late. It was late because it took forever to finish nine short holes. It took forever because we had to wait to tee off on every single hole. We had to wait because of people not playing ready golf. There was a very sizable gap last night between the first and second groups, which seems to have slowed the eight groups behind.

I guess it's time for a not-so-friendly reminder that slow play is one of very few things that can make golfing less fun. I've heard from multiple people that they've quit the league or stopped subbing because our league is just too slow. Please help "encourage" your teammates to play ready golf while you're out on the course. I want this to be fun for everyone.

Following these few tips makes a big difference.

Hit the ball!
Tee off on time. The first group almost always has a wide open fairway at 4:52. Hit the ball!
Obviously, keep up with the group ahead of you. They're how you should measure your pace. If they're pulling away from you, you need to take steps to catch up.
Be ready to hit when it's your turn! That means get to your ball, figure out the distance and the club you need, envision your shot and get into your stance while others are shooting. There is no need to wait until every ball stops rolling before you can begin your pre-shot routine. Hit the ball!
Even if you're not out, hit if you're ready. Sometimes the player who's out is struggling and needs time to rake, find a ball, get a different club, etc. If you're ready, hit the ball.
Limit yourself to one practice swing! It's not the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits - hit the ball!
Give the gimmes (read more about it here). If your opponent's ball is within the leather of the putter, tell him to pick it up. If there are new golfers or subs in your group, tell them about the gimmes. They really can speed up a round.
TAKE the gimmes. I am now diverging a bit from the rule I laid out last season, which says you have the option of putting anyway. For the sake of pace, if someone gives you a putt, pick up the ball, count your stroke (and your blessings). In other words, don't hit the ball!
Watch where your ball is going so you can find it. (I'm not the best at this one.) Lots of time is lost looking for a ball in the wrong place.
Chat when you're walking to your balls. According to PGA metrics (I'm not making this up) there should be about 49 minutes of just walking to your ball on this course. Between that and the tee box, that's plenty of time to talk. When it's time to get ready to hit, shut yer yap for a minute. Then hit the ball!
If you have trouble walking quickly, consider using a cart.
If you're already behind, be judicious about when you solicit the refreshment cart. When possible, hit first, then quench your thirst.

As for results, the Loescher team swept their way into first, with the help of the Kraus team, who knocked the Moritz team down a peg (two, actually). Andy Taylor led all golfers with a season-low 35, and Dave Rieves was close behind with a 36. There was quite a mix of good scores and bad scores this week, as our league average increased for the second straight time. Just because it's the dog days of summer doesn't mean we have to play like dogs!

Week 12 Recap

Sorry I didn't get these out sooner. I was busy watching Big Break Sandals Resorts on the Golf Channel. I only watch it for the golf.

Last week's top three teams kept the pressure on each other Tuesday night, with 5, 5, and 6 points. The Moritz lead is now 1.5 points over the Loescher team, and 2 over the Kraus team.

Lots of good scores again this week, led by Lynn Paulson's 34 and Chris Weber's 34. 25 of the 37 golfers with handicaps shot under par and another six were at par. Two golfers had back-to-back birdies on Tuesday - Steve Smith (1 & 2) and Steve Moritz (7 & 8). Next week I'm going in the score book as Steve Wolfe.

The flight tournament starts in three weeks. More news coming in the next couple weeks.

I handed out most of the prizes last Tuesday, but still have balls and cash for those who weren't there.

Week 11 Recap

Well, I didn't realize how responsive you'd be when I encouraged low scores this week, but the results were pretty amazing. Perhaps it was the return of Travis Thoeny that inspired the league to average 43.3 (lowest since I've been Commish, by 0.7 strokes).

I felt pretty good coming off the course at 5 under par, but felt pretty inadequate when the scores started coming in and we had a 9 under (Brad Nelson), two at 10 under (Tom Weber & Andy Taylor) and an 11 under par (Bob Moritz).

All in all, seven players scored in the 30's led by Bob Moritz and his career low 34. Andy Taylor was one behind at 35. The rest were Travis Thoeny (36), Lynn Paulson and Taylor Devalk (37), Steve McDonnell (38), and Scott Gomez (39).

The Moritz team, behind their Captain, tallied 5 points to maintain their second half lead - by two points over the Kraus team, and 2.5 ahead of the Loescher team.

Week 10 is now in the books, and the Moritz team swept its way into first place in the second half. The temperature was high and the scores were low, Tuesday. Only four players were in the 30's - Mike Warren, Lynn Paulson, Shawn McGettigan, and Steve Moritz, but there were another SIX golfers who scored a 40. There were six birdies recorded Tuesday, half of them on the 6th hole. I guess people get less jittery when they move the pin out from behind the sand there.

Results and Standings are now posted, along with week 9's results and standings, which took me a while to post. (Week 9 saw our lowest score of the season posted - Dennis Hill's 34. That should give the better golfers something to shoot for the rest of the season.) There were about four adding errors this week, so if your score looks different than you remember, it's likely due to sucky addition.

2nd Annual League Scramble a Smashing Success!

For the first time in league history, the mid-summer classic - also known as the league scramble - went off without a single hitch. Golfers frolicked in the sun at a brisk pace, scores went to historically low levels, much laughter and good-natured back slapping could be witnessed on the course, good food was digested, and the evening was topped off with gumdrops, lollipops, and a dazzling fireworks display!

Golfers were unanimously delighted with the results, as the top performers modestly thanked their lucky stars, and those who couldn't claim the top spot this year responded with bold and witty prognostications about next year's results. Also, there was cotton candy.

Upon conclusion of a bountiful buffet provided by the local golf club, the most accomplished of the golfers were singled out for their stellar performances. Rousing ovations and “huzzahs” were observed for the following individual feats:

On Glenway's third hole, team captain MIKE KRAUS astounded as he holed a shot that traveled a longer distance than any other holed shot.
On the long and difficult fourth hole, young MIKE WARREN struck a tee shot of improbable distance and accuracy, a better combination than any other!
On the tree-shrouded sixth hole, PATRICK McEVILLY THE SENIOR managed a skilled tee shot which traveled past several potentially treacherous hazards and ended its journey on the green, very close to its desired resting place!
On the seventh hole – a dog-legged tangle of trees and hills – young master PAUL SCHUETTLER skillfully placed his second strike onto the green at a lesser distance to the hole than any other golfer!

These gentlemen were feted by their colleagues and they could barely keep pace with the congratulatory pints of ale that flowed their ways. Also, they had ice cream. With sprinkles.

Finally, the team results of the scramble were tabulated and announced. And what could be better than four men being crowned league scramble victors for an entire year? Well, the answer - believe it or not – is EIGHT men being crowned victors, and that is exactly what happened! In a true miracle of the golf gods, the KRAUS and McGETTIGAN teams (or McGETTIGAN and KRAUS teams, if that's your persuasion) finished the course with the exact same number of strokes – 29, three below par for the course! Scramble organizers scrambled (indeed!) to research the available tie breakers. Tie breaker after tie breaker was evaluated but, after each, neither of the two behemoths would stand down. Once the tie breakers were exhausted, it was perfectly clear that not the slightest hair separated the performances of this modern day Monitor and Merrimack.

At the announcement that the scramble had ended in a dead heat, the eight victors were encircled by the remaining partygoers, who chanted several rounds of “Hip! Hip! Hooray!!”

As the crowd reeled from the excitement of the championship finish, the results for the third place finish were learned, and they mirrored those for first place! The NELSON and DVORAK teams finished in their own dead heat, at two strokes under par for the course. More congratulatory back-patting commenced, until all were exhausted from the celebration.

There was, however, just enough remaining energy and glee for patron Shawn McGettigan to lead the merrymakers in a boisterous round of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," in appreciation of your humble servant - the league commissioner. The gratitude was graciously received and returned to the singing golfers.

League Scramble - June 29

If you're looking for first half results, scroll down after you read this.

The 2nd Annual League Scramble and Cookout will be held next Tuesday night. Team tee times are posted up there in the corner.

I will be collecting $11 for the cookout as you come off the course Tuesday. I got payment from nine of you this week. If you will not be attending the cookout, please let me know so I can give Bill a head count. The $11 covers brats, burgers, potato salad, beans, chips, dessert, tax, and tip. It does not cover your beverages. Food will be served around 7:30/7:45.

For those of you unfamiliar with the "scramble" format, the rules are as follows:

Each foursome plays as a team and keeps one score for the team (including putts).
After each golfer tees off, the team picks one shot to play next, and each golfer hits from there. The three people whose shots won't be used should retrieve their balls and drop within a club-length of the ball chosen to be played, but if the ball you are playing is in the rough or a hazard you must play from that rough or hazard. You may improve your lie (winter rules).
Follow this same procedure until your team holes out.
When putting, the first person puts a mark down to identify where the others should putt from if the first person misses.
At least one tee shot from each golfer in the foursome must be used on one of the nine holes. You do not need to decide whose tee shot is to be used until after everybody has teed off on a hole, unless you are forced to use a specific golfer’s tee shot on holes 7, 8, or 9 because you have not used one of their tee shots yet.

There will be cash prizes for the top 3 foursomes. The tie breakers are as follows, in order of priority:

Most birdies
Least bogeys
Fewest putts
Fewest total strokes on the five par 4 holes

There will also be four "regular" holes prizes:

Longest holed shot (putt or chip) on #3
Longest drive in fairway on #4
Closest to the pin (on the green) in 1 shot on #6
Closest to the pin in 2 shots (on the green) on #7
